Hip-Hop fan? Buy a Hip-Hop House!

OK, that title is a little silly, but it’s true, you can be the new owner of a famous rapper’s home. Actually, there are 5 that were reported…

Suge Knight. After he filed for bankruptcy and lost control of his record company, Death Row Records founder Suge Knight’s $6.2 million mansion went up for sale last year.

Kanye West. The Grammy-winning rapper’s six-bedroom, 35,000-square-foot Beverly Hills, Calif., mansion went up for sale six months ago for $8.7 million.

Russell Simmons. The Saddle River, N.J., manse of producer Russell Simmons is for sale for $20 million.

50 Cent. Rapper 50 Cent’s Farmington, Conn., 19-bedroom, 50,000-square foot mansion went on the market last year for $18.5 million.

Scott Storch. The hip-hop producer’s $10 million mansion is located on Miami Beach’s exclusive, manmade Palm Island. Storch, recently hitless and two years delinquent on property taxes, is facing foreclosure.

Now, I’m not big into rap, but even I know who most of these guys are. I think it would be pretty cool to own one of their homes. Hey, maybe you’ve even seen these homes on “Cribs”, MTV’s show where they feature the homes of famous artists. You can actually say you have a home on “Cribs”! Holla!

Adopt– Don’t Shop Event

Sunday, May 4th at Speck’s Pet Supply. The Hendricks County Animal Shelter will be holding it’s “Adopt– Don’t Shop” pet adoption event from 11am-3pm.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that the shelter has to destroy countless unwated animals each year. Many pet owners do not spay and neuter their pets, and then act surprised when unwanted offspring appear. When the unwanted puppies and kittens end up at the animal shelter, they can become a taxpayer burden if they are kept for too long.

Another reason so many pets are put down at the shelter is that once they are there, nobody adopts them. Potential pet owners go to a pet store which may get their animals from a “puppy mill”.

At Speck’s on Sunday there will be many loveable pets available for adoption. There will be rescue groups and shelters there, hoping to help you find your next pet. I am sure they would also be willing to take donations to help buy things like pet food and supplies needed at the shelter, if you do not want to take any pets home. The phone number for more info is: (317) 718-0312.

Financial Tips for Couples

Happy Valentine’s Day!! As you are celebrating your couple-ness today with your sweetie, remember that it is not all roses and chocolates and cards. Sometimes things are tough, and that can hurt even the best relationships. Here are some financial tips to help smooth or prevent the rough times:

1. Have “the Talk”. Talking about money and debt isn’t pleasant, I know. However, it is very important to share your financial info with your partner. If something horrible were to happen to you, it is important that they know where your safe-deposit box is, what savings/checking and investment accounts you  have, where valuables are kept, and what you would like done if the unforseen should happen. It is important to share your final wishes while you are still able.

2. Boost your Life Insurance. Again, in preparing for the rest of your life, you need to consider who you are leaving behind. If you were to die, would your spouse be able to handle all the bills on their own? Life insurance will be able to keep your family afloat in a very difficult time.

3. What about disablity insurance? If you were seriously hurt, and became disabled, you will need money to help replace your income. Even if you had a sort-term problem, say, 3 months, do you have enough savings in reserve to pay your bills?

4. What WILL happen? Who WILL take care of your children if you and your spouse both die? Who WILL get your family heirlooms, who WILL inherit your home? Do you see the theme here?

5. Both partners in a relationship need to know the day-to-day financial situation. One person may be responsible for getting the bills paid, but both need to know how much debt you are in as a couple, what your monthly budget is (Yes, BUDGET!), how much you can afford to spend and where your money is going. After you rack up $100,000 in debt is not the time to open your eyes to what you’re spending. Pay attention as you go to prevent any unpleasant surprises down the road.

I hope these tips can help you on the road to financial success with your partner.
