Hendricks Regional Health YMCA January 25, 2012

I’m excited to have finally taken the leap and joined the Y. I want to let you all know that we love it and I highly recommend it. My kids hang out in the Child Watch area while I get my workout done. Then, after I’m finished I like to let them each take a turn rock climbing. Once it warms up a bit I’m sure we will be in the pool, the boys can’t wait to try the slide!

My favorite thing so far has been my fitness orientation. The fitness coach helped me make sure that I knew how to use all the machines, and saved all my settings in the FitLinx system so that I don’t have to remember how weight to use or how many reps to do. The little computer even measures my range of motion to be sure I’m doing the exercises right. I’m proud to say that after only 2 attempts, I can do ALL of the exercises assigned to me, and do all my reps :)

There is a Subway inside, as well as the pool, sauna, rock climbing wall, basketball courts, fitness center, classrooms, and locker rooms. My next goal is to attempt some Zumba classes! Who’s in?

Haunted Houses for Sale- The Disclosure Issue November 1, 2011

Haunted House

Just in time for Halloween, I was watching a show on the DIY Network about home buyers considering purchasing supposedly haunted houses. The show followed potential home buyers as they had the home investigated by experts, and then determined if they could live with the findings.

What I thought was very interesting was that in each case the Realtor discussed the disclosure law in whatever state they were in. For example, one of the homes was in Florida (I think– I’m not particularly familiar with the real estate laws of Florida, so don’t quote me on that), and the Realtor said that because they are a full disclosure state, he had to tell them that the house was haunted. In one case, they were NOT in a full disclosure state, but the agent felt obligated to tell them because he was actually the seller as well.

In Indiana, Realtors are NOT required to disclose a psychologically effected home, unless specifically asked, and then, only if they know.

“psychologically affected property” includes real estate or a dwelling that is for sale, rent, or lease and to which one (1) or more of the following facts or a reasonable suspicion of facts apply:
(1) That an occupant of the property was afflicted with or died from a disease related to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
(2) That an individual died on the property.
(3) That the property was the site of:
(A) a felony under IC 35;
(B) criminal gang (as defined in IC 35-45-9-1) activity;
(C) the discharge of a firearm involving a law enforcement officer while engaged in the officer’s official duties; or
(D) the illegal manufacture or distribution of a controlled substance.

My advice to you? If you are considering purchasing a piece of property, and you are worried about this, do a little bit of research. Check online to see if there are any newspaper articles regarding the house, ask the neighbors, ask your agent.

Washington Township Park Expansion Offers a LOT to Those who Can Find it! September 7, 2010

Many local residents don’t even know where to find the new park expansion, but it is definitely worth seeking out. According to the Hendricks County Star:

The nearly $6 million park expansion includes 89 acres of woodlands and pastures for hiking and biking, a new 12,000-square-foot Washington Township Pavilion Center, large amphitheater, two shelters, a splash pad, playground and plenty of parking. A free grand opening celebration is scheduled for Oct. 9.

So how do you get there if nobody knows where it is? The new facilities are located about a mile beyond the current park. You will follow Broyles Road (That’s the road the runs along the back side of Washington Twp Park) through wooded areas, under and old bridge, over the river and through the woods… oh wait… sorry, follow it about a mile to the secluded recreation area. Sounds like it will be beautiful!

The pavillion will be able to handle large parties with up to 300 people, it includes a warming kitchen, fireplace, cathedral ceilings, and temporary walls if you prefer a more intimate setting.

Pasta (and Rice) Drive! September 2, 2010

I read on Twitter that a friend of mine is conducting a pasta drive on her blog, Nap Time in Naptown, and I decide that I would love to help as much as possible. So, I decided to shamelessly steal her fabulous idea and run with it, hosting a Pasta Drive of my own here at my office.

Second Helpings is running dangerously low on their suplies of pasta and rice, and they use up to 100 POUNDS per day to help fight hunger right here in Indy.

“At Second Helpings, we fight hunger and empower people. We rescue prepared and perishable food, re-prepare it into nutritious meals, and distribute those meals to over 50 social services organizations that feed hungry people. We also use rescued food to train disadvantaged adults for careers in the culinary field, helping to eliminate hunger at its source.”

To do our part, we are using our office as a collection point and spreading the news that WE WANT TO HELP! Please drop off donations of pasta and rice at the Carpenter Office right behind Best Buy in Avon before September 14. On the 15th, my car (Cleo) will become the Pasta Mobile and I will load her up and drop off all the pasta we collect at Second Helpings.

Pasta and rice are inexpensive and go a long way, so please help do your part!
